Battling Ships is based on naval paintings by Rudolf Claudus (1893 - 1964), depicting a naval battle that dramatically captures the violence and energy of naval engagements in the 16th and 17th centuries. Mostly thought to be referencing the Battle of 1812, it could be an engagement with pirates.

Rudolf Claudus is one of the most important European naval artists, born in 1893 in Austria. At the end of the First World War, he became the official painter of the Italian Navy. In 1935, Roosevelt commissioned him to paint multiple paintings. In 1942, Queen Elena di Savoia commissioned him as well. A vast collection of his naval canvases is situated in England, where he worked for the Royal Navy at the end of the Second World War.

We source some of our woven tapestry textiles from France, Belgium, Italy, and Spain, countries with long and celebrated histories of textile artistry. From there, much of the finishing work takes place in our own studio. By combining European-sourced woven textiles with hands-on finishing and attention to detail, we bring each piece one step closer to becoming a beautiful addition to your home.

Available as a 41"w x 26"h wall hanging.
