The Fallen Angel is based on the original oil painting by Alexandre Cabanel in 1847. He sent it back to France from Rome to show his artistic progress while he was in school. Depicting an angel expelled from Heaven. It is said to depict an enraged Lucifer with his hands crossed and tears on his cheeks, lying on the ground while angels fly above. His once white wings are flecked with shades of blue, black, and gold.
The original painting has been in the Musée Fabre since 1888.
